Workshop Details:

In offset printing, a second impression that appears where it shouldn't be is called a "ghost image": a faint duplication of the image, produced accidentally. This time, it's intentional.

GHOSTING is the third session of NightCut, a series of evenings dedicated to collage, in Lisbon. Fifteen people, mostly strangers to each other, sit around a long table in a dark studio, amidst candles, wine and piles of paper, and spend the night creating with their hands.

This edition takes place on Halloween and was conceived for that date — but it's not a party. It's an alternative for those who want to go out on the night of October 31st without going to a nightclub. The room is darkened, with light only on the table, while Dreyer's Nosferatu (1922) and Vampyr (1932) are projected silently onto the wall, accompanied by music. Both films use double exposure, a technique in which shadows appear to separate from bodies and images unfold. That's where the name of this night comes from.

There are no classes, no rigid instructions, and no right answers.

In the end, each participant takes home the artwork they created — and also traces of the materials scattered across the table on their hands.

Program:

8:00 PM - 9:00 PM · Arrival. Wine, snacks, and introductions. Each participant draws a card and receives the corresponding envelope of materials.

9:00 PM - 11:00 PM · Creation. The quietest part of the evening. Only the table is lit; silent films play on the wall accompanied by music. Each person works individually, and can ask the hostess for help.

11:00 PM - 1:00 AM · Socializing. Time to discover the work of other participants, take photographs, and have a drink. At 11:00 PM, a special drink will be served.

Disguises are welcome, but not mandatory; black clothing is preferred. Those who come in disguise may draw a second card.

What you will learn:

Basic techniques of manual collage: cutting, tearing, layering materials, and composing images on paper.

How to create something from found materials — magazines, photographs, paper, foil, and fabric — instead of starting with a blank sheet of paper.

How to start without a defined plan and discover how a limitation or a randomly chosen set of images can open up creative possibilities, rather than restrict them.

A brief introduction to the history of collage, with references to Braque, Schwitters, Höch and Matisse, shared informally throughout the evening.

Is prior experience necessary?

No.

The price includes wine, non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks.

The event will be photographed. Those who prefer not to appear in the photographs may indicate this upon arrival.

Anyone who has specific images, papers, or objects they would like to work with is welcome to bring them.
